Frequently asked questions
Is this legal advice?
No. Lightfathom is a search and research tool, not a law firm. A report shows what we found in public registers on the date of the search. It is not an opinion on whether you can register or use the name. Please have a trademark lawyer review it before you file or launch.
Will you tell me if I can register my name?
We don’t give opinions on registrability. We tell you what is out there, how close it is and why it might matter. A similar mark doesn’t always mean you can’t use a name, and finding no close match doesn’t mean you can. A trademark lawyer can tell you which applies to you.
Which registers do you search?
The Name Report searches USPTO (United States) and INPI (Brazil). For UKIPO (United Kingdom), a person runs the IPO’s public search by hand for each report and records the date. For EUIPO (European Union) and the WIPO Global Brand Database (international filings), it gives you each office’s own search with your name filled in; we don’t search those two ourselves. We also check .com, .co, .ai and .io domains plus country domains you choose, the main social handles, and the Apple App Store and Google Play.
How is this different from free US name checks?
Free checks usually cover US records only. A name with no close match in the US can be taken in the EU, the UK or Brazil. Lightfathom searches the US, the UK and Brazil in one report, explains what it finds in plain English, and links you to the official EU and international searches.
Why include Brazil?
It’s one of the largest markets founders launch in or expand to, and its trademark search system is in Portuguese. We search it in Portuguese and explain the results in English.
Which languages do you check translations in?
We compare meanings across English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian, using a word list that keeps growing. A translation match is a prompt to look closer, not a full linguistic review, so a lawyer should check translations for the markets you plan to sell in.
What does “near-match” mean?
Marks that look, sound or mean something close to yours, even when the spelling differs. Think of a different spelling that sounds the same, a shared core word, or the same word in another language.
What happens if a register is down?
We mark it “Couldn’t check” and say so in the report. We never show a source we couldn’t reach as having no match.
How fast is delivery?
Within 24 hours of ordering. If it’s late, you can ask for a full refund within 7 days.
What if the report is wrong?
Tell us within 7 days of delivery and we’ll refund you in full. No forms, no back-and-forth.
What do you do with my name idea?
We use it only to run your search. We never sell it. We share it only with the public search services we query to run your check, and we delete your inputs 30 days after delivery. See our privacy notice.
Do you file trademarks?
No. We find and explain; a lawyer advises and files. Every report includes a one-page Counsel Summary to make that hand-off easy.
